Did you know that the sense of smell is one of the first senses that an infant develops after birth? Young babies cannot see well, but they know the scent of their mothers right away - without that, they wouldn't know where to find food! Aromas help us to identify both pleasure (think about the scent of cookies baking) and danger (like the smell of smoke.)
We gather clues about the world around us by inhaling fragrances. While it is common for the sense of smell to diminish with age, loss of the ability to identify scents can be a serious problem. Keep your mind sharp by testing your ability to identify essential oils by the smell test alone. Without looking at the label, open bottles of essential oils, and see if you can recognize the scent. You can build your sense of smell with practice, so even if you're not good at it now, keep trying.
Anosmia, or the total inability to smell, can be really upset your life. I have met a few people who have lost their "smellability," and I can hardly convey the devastation this event caused.

Keep bugs off you without using DEET or other scary chemicals.
